Women’s History Month: 8 Mixes of Musical Magic

In celebration of Women’s History Month, we take a look back at the shows by women that have wowed us over the years.

Womens History Month

It’s Women’s History Month! We want to celebrate the amazing artists and DJs that have had a hand in shaping music and culture before our eyes. In an industry that already sidelines women by way of gender inequality, their contributions don’t go unnoticed. In fact, the efforts of women-led platforms to center the abilities of all women in DJ and club culture is serving to reverse the tide and ensure a level playing field.

To commemorate Women’s History Month, we’ve put together a collection of some of our favorite moments of musical magic by women DJs and creators around the world on our platform.

Channel 4 – Annie Mac’s House Party

Back in 2012, UK broadcaster Channel 4 unleashed it’s first all-night DJ takeover featuring sets by an all-star cast. Frankie Knuckles, Norman Jay, Toddla T, Soul II Soul and Grandmaster Flash just to name a few. Talk about heavy! But legendary DJ Annie Mac had something to say as well, giving us a mix for the ages. Listen for some amazing cross-genre fun by the likes of Knife Party, Azealia Banks, Steve Aoki, TNGHT and more.

My Analog Journal – Organic Latin Grooves With Santa Leticia

We can always count on our friends at My Analog Journal for consistently great mixes and this by Santa Leticia is no different. Spain-born, UK-based Santa traveled far and wide to put together a mix with love. She collected records from Colombia, Peru, Mexico, Venezuela and Belize to give us an offering dripping in Latin grooves. But that also lets us in on the musical history of the countries involved.

Worldwide FM – Classic Album Sundays: Aretha Franklin

It is without question that Aretha Franklin is one of the greatest artists of all time. Revered around the globe, her instantly recognizable voice and endless stream of hit records have influenced the generations after her. In celebration of her life, Mixcloud family Colleen ‘Cosmo’ Murphy explores two seminal Franklin albums on her ‘Classic Album Sundays’ show on Worldwide FM. She plays the albums I Never Loved A Man The Way I Love You and Lady Soul in full, with plenty of commentary in between.

The Blessed Madonna – We Still Believe Episode 90

The Blessed Madonna continues to push boundaries as a DJ and artist. But we want to show some love to her radio show. Concluding in 2021, she went out with a glorious bang by revisiting a mix made the previous year. Just as COVID-19 put the world on pause. With tracks by the Pet Shop Boys, The Orb, Kashka and plenty of remixes and edits, it’s a beautiful end of an era.

Oroko Radio – Orí w/ Kikelomo – 3rd February 2022

Kikelomo, co-founder of Oroko Radio, pays tribute to her Nigerian origins on her ‘Orí’ show, with ‘Orí translating from Yoruba translation to ‘head.’ Yet, the show is incredibly unpredictable, exploring sounds such as Jungle, Afrobeats, Techno and House. This edition from 2022 is four to the floor heaven and will have you running to your nearest electronic rave.

Sonos Radio – Björk

Sonos Radio enlisted the enigmatic Björk to host her own show on their platform. One that is aptly titled ‘21 Years Worth Of Wave Files Liquidated Into A Stream.’ This episode serves as the pilot. It gives you a glimpse into the mind of an artist who has touched the world for over 30 years, as well as, in her own words, her “living in the ocean of music.”

The Lot Radio – Analog Soul – 1st March 2016

DJ duo and twin sisters Analog Soul might be from Brooklyn, New York, but Detroit Techno is in their DNA. That’s the lesson we took when they blessed The Lot Radio in 2016, serving up nearly two hours of mellow and rocking electronic flavors. Expect tracks by Larry Heard, Skaps the Deejay, Xanwany, Xamiga and plenty more.

NTS Radio – Who’s That Girl – Yoko Ono – A Grapefruit Score

In 2018, NTS Radio paid tribute to the indomitable Yoko Ono by putting together a vibrant score of music soundtracked by quotes by the woman herself. They range from the serene and ambient to meditative. You’re also walked through additional commentary throughout that speaks to balancing the mind, body and soul.
