Mixcloud launches on Apple TV ahead of competitors

At Mixcloud we love reshaping the way people around the world listen to long-form music and speech radio. So we’re excited to reveal that we’ve expanded our service by launching our bespoke app on Apple’s new Apple TV.

With our 13 million monthly listeners, we thought it was high time we lined up alongside online media giants such as Netflix, Vimeo and YouTube, by getting our hand into the mainstream TV market, ahead of SoundCloud, Spotify and Deezer.

It’s all about giving you the best and most comfortable ways to listen to and enjoy your favourite Mixcloud shows, Podcasts and DJ mixes, which you can now access from the comfort of your living room.

Mat Clayton, Co-founder of Mixcloud: “We’re excited to be on the new Apple TV platform as it launches. The living room is a big opportunity for Mixcloud. We launched our Sonos app in beta earlier this year and Apple TV is the next part of our strategy to go big in the home. We’ve got a great catalogue of shows to entertain people at home both alone and with friends, and we’ve built the product to be simple and intuitive with a more lean back experience than our other apps.”

People are consuming music in a wide variety of ways, and we want to give you – the consumer – the flexibility to enjoy streaming audio from your TV, as well as our mobile apps, and the more traditional web browser.

There are millions of hours of quality audio on Mixcloud to suit any occasion – from dinner party to chill out, from politics, science, technology, food, to full-on partying – and you can search at leisure straight from the comfort of your couch.

Feedback from users of our Apple TV app has so far has been great, one Twitter user said: “@T888_SCB: New @mixcloud app on the Apple TV is sick. Can listen to all my favourite @DJRUSSKE Mixes”

Digital DJ Tips on uploading DJ mixes

The team over at Digital DJ Tips have always impressed us with their knowledge and understanding of the DJ landscape. They recently wrote an informative post about uploading DJ mixes and radio shows/Podcasts to the Internet and the challenges with some platforms due to copyright and take downs.

Their conclusion is a pretty clear, 100% recommendation to use Mixcloud for DJ/radio content since our platform is built with this audience in mind:

“As ever, we recommend services like Mixcloud. Mixcloud may look similar, but it operates on a different type of licence. One of the stipulations of Mixcloud’s licence is that mixes on the service aren’t downloadable”

“Me? It has to be Mixcloud – worry removed from your shoulders and your mixes safely available on a smart, stable platform.”

So if you’re looking for a trusted place to upload DJ mixes and music radio shows to the web, you know where to come!

Straight from the play box..

In the spirit of Mixcloud community, we wanted to position the looking glass over Kieran Lockyear and his project ‘Straight from the play box’, which has brought together DJs from all over the world to create a virtual festival of vinyl 45s shared from their own collections.

There are alot of great djs and collectors world wide who have some very rare (original) Soul/Funk 45s in there collection that you cant hear unless you happen to go to an event… so I asked a couple of djs if they would send me a mix of just ten 45s from there play box and they were kind enough to oblige, so I asked a few more, were at 60+ now and still more to come” Kieran.

The series has gained notoriety across the world as more and more DJs get involved and is quite possibly one of the best selections of soul & funk vinyls on the net today.

Celebration of Curation 2013: North America

Celebration of Curation 2013 is our two week fiesta of collaborations with key Cloudcasters across ten different cities. This year, we’re teaming up with some of the biggest and brightest editorial voices around to celebrate the power of curation, and to showcase what their cities sound like.

Day 8 is devoted to North America. The Americas (USA & Canada) release a heap of great music that we simply could not ignore so we asked some of our lovely curators on the site to bring you a selection of what’s blasting their speakers right now. Enjoy exclusive mixes of Monty Luke presented by Discogs, Matthew Dear, Lexis, Peanut Butter Wolf and Kevin Saunderson.
